Where to change money in Bangkok: the areas where rates actually cluster

Bangkok has the sharpest cash rates in Thailand, but they are concentrated in a handful of streets. On 14 October 2026 the live Bangkok ranking covered 86 counters, and the gap between the best and worst US dollar rate among them was 360 baht per US$1,000. Walk to the wrong one and you give up 1%.

The mid-market rate was 33.58 to the dollar, so the best counter in the city was 0.2% below interbank and the worst 1.3% below. Of the 86 counters, 36 belong to SuperRich 1965, 23 to Superrich Thailand, 14 to Twelve Victory, three or four each to Value Plus, Happy Rich and K79, and one each to Grand Superrich, Vasu and X-One.
The areas that matter
Pratunam / Ratchadamri — This is the centre of gravity. Superrich Thailand’s head office on Ratchadamri Soi 1, Grand Superrich a minute away, and several smaller operators sit within one block. Competition is direct and visible, which is exactly why the rates are good. On 14 October the green head office had the best rate in the city for dollars, euros, pounds, yen, yuan and Taiwan dollars; the only major currency it lost was Korean won, which Grand Superrich across the road took at 0.0253 against 0.0252. If you are changing a serious amount, this is where you go. BTS Chit Lom, then the skywalk towards Ratchadamri.
Silom / Surawong — SuperRich 1965’s head office is in Silom Plaza, with Vasu and X-One nearby and Value Plus on Soi Thaniya. Convenient from BTS Sala Daeng, and the rates are close to Pratunam: the best orange dollar on 14 October was 33.44, 70 baht per US$1,000 behind the green head office — although that figure was posted at the chain’s Big C Place Ratchadapisek branch rather than at Silom itself.
Sukhumvit — Vasu at Soi 7/1 near BTS Nana is the long-standing option, and there are counters at Terminal 21 Asok. Good if you are staying in the area; not worth a special trip.
Shopping malls — CentralWorld, Terminal 21, MBK, Iconsiam, Emsphere, One Bangkok and the rest all have branches of the major chains. Rates run slightly below the head offices because of rent, but they are air-conditioned, open late and far better than the airport arrival hall. On Nut and the outer districts — K79 near BTS On Nut is a local favourite and frequently competitive. The same group also shows how far a branch without a rival across the road can drift: its K81 counter on Ram Inthra 81 posted the worst dollar, euro, pound and yen in the city on 14 October.
What actually changes the number you get
The branch, not the brand. Superrich Thailand and SuperRich 1965 are separate companies, and within each, every branch posts its own rate. On 14 October the green head office was the best green branch for every currency, but the orange chain’s best dollar was at Big C Place, its best yuan at the Bangkok Hospital branch, and its best won in Pattaya. “Go to Superrich” is only half a decision; see which Superrich is which.
The denomination. At the green head office on 14 October a US$100 or US$50 note earned 33.51, a US$20 or US$10 earned 33.45, a US$5 earned 33.40 and a US$1 earned 33.25 — 60 baht per US$1,000 lost on twenties and 260 on singles. Euros stepped only from 37.50 (€500 to €100) to 37.45 (€50 to €5); yuan dropped from 5.02 for ¥100 and ¥50 to 4.94 for ¥20 and ¥10 and 4.64 below that. Bring the largest, cleanest notes you have. The currency. The shop with the best USD rate is frequently not the shop with the best EUR or JPY rate. On 14 October the won leader was not the dollar leader, and the orange chain’s yuan leader was not its dollar leader. Rankings have to be per currency.
Bring your passport
Thai anti-money-laundering rules require licensed money changers to record identification for every transaction. A phone photo often passes for small amounts; carry the original. A counter that does not ask is a reason for caution, not relief. Details are in the passport and ID rules.
Airport versus city
The bank counters in the Suvarnabhumi arrival hall do not publish rates and are not in the ranking; by experience they run well below the city. The counters on floor B by the Airport Rail Link platform do publish, and on 14 October the best dollar there was 33.41 against 33.51 in town — 100 baht per US$1,000, 0.3%. The euro gap was the same 100 baht per €1,000, and yen, won and yuan were within a few baht per typical transaction.
So: change 3,000–5,000 baht in the arrival hall for the taxi and first meal if you must; if you are taking the train, floor B costs almost nothing and no detour. See airport vs city rates and the Suvarnabhumi page.
Opening hours and Sundays
On 14 October 58 of the 63 Bangkok counters with published hours were open on Sunday. The five that close are mostly the ones people travel for: the Superrich Thailand head office on Ratchadamri 1 (Saturday 09:30–17:00), Vasu Exchange on Sukhumvit Soi 7/1, X-One on Surawong, Twelve Victory at the Government Complex on Chaeng Watthana, and Happy Rich Point on the Don Mueang walkway. On a Sunday the best rate in town has to come from the head office’s Pratunam neighbours or the malls. Three stayed open past 21:00: Happy Rich on the walkway to the Don Mueang Red Line station (22:00), Value Plus on Soi Thaniya in Silom (23:00) and Happy Rich at the Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link station (24:00). Stand-alone offices in Pratunam and Silom close earlier than the malls, so the best rates are a daytime purchase; after dark it is mall branches and those three. What it adds up to
Between the best and worst counter on 14 October: 360 baht per US$1,000, 350 per €1,000, 200 per ¥100,000. Between the two best brands: 70 baht per US$1,000. Between hundreds and twenties at the same window: 60 baht per US$1,000. None of it justifies crossing town; all of it justifies ten seconds with the ranking and choosing the right one of two neighbouring doors.
Check before you walk
Board rates move several times a day with interbank. ThaiRate reads the published rates from each company’s own website every few minutes, so the ranking shows what the shops are quoting right now.
