Bangkok has the sharpest cash rates in Thailand, but they are concentrated in a handful of streets. Walk two stops in the wrong direction and you give up 2%.
The areas that matter
Pratunam / Ratchadamri — This is the centre of gravity. Superrich Thailand’s head office on Ratchadamri Soi 1, Grand Superrich a minute away, and several smaller operators sit within one block. Competition is direct and visible, which is exactly why the rates are good. If you are changing a serious amount, this is where you go.
Silom / Surawong — SuperRich 1965’s head office is in Silom Plaza, with Vasu and X-One nearby. Convenient from BTS Sala Daeng, and the rates are close to Pratunam.
Sukhumvit — Vasu at Soi 7/1 near BTS Nana is the long-standing option, and there are counters at Terminal 21 Asok. Good if you are staying in the area; not worth a special trip.
Shopping malls — CentralWorld, Terminal 21, MBK, Iconsiam and the rest all have branches of the major chains. Rates run slightly below the head offices because the rent is higher, but they are air-conditioned, open late, and still far better than the airport.
On Nut — K79 near BTS On Nut is a local favourite and frequently competitive.
What actually changes the number you get
The branch, not the brand. Superrich Thailand and SuperRich 1965 are separate companies, and within each, every branch posts its own rate. The head offices are consistently the best; mall branches run a little behind. “Go to Superrich” is only half a decision.
The denomination. A US$100 note earns more baht per dollar than a US$20, often by 1–2%. Bring the largest, cleanest notes you have. Torn, written-on or pre-2006 US dollars may be refused or discounted.
The currency. The shop with the best USD rate is frequently not the shop with the best EUR or JPY rate. Rankings have to be per currency.
Bring your passport
Thai anti-money-laundering rules require licensed money changers to record identification for every transaction. A photo on your phone often passes for small amounts; carry the original to be safe.
Airport versus city
Arrival-hall counters at Suvarnabhumi run 2–4% below the city. Change 3,000–5,000 baht there for the taxi and first meal, then change the rest in town. If you take the Airport Rail Link, the exchange counters on floor B are noticeably better than the arrival hall and cost you no detour at all.
Check before you walk
Board rates move several times a day with the interbank market. THX reads the published rates from each company’s own website every few minutes, so the ranking reflects what the shops themselves are quoting right now. Confirm the board before you hand over money — the board in the shop is final.
