Changing money on Koh Samui
Koh Samui has one tracked counter, and it is not a money changer in the usual sense: the Government Savings Bank exchange counters at Samui Airport. No shop elsewhere on the island is tracked, so the list is a single line.
The site does not have confirmed opening hours for the counters, so do not rely on them for a late arrival without checking. They quote 17 currencies.
On 28 September 2026 the best US dollar buying rate was 33.18 baht against a mid-market rate of 33.42. That is 0.33 baht below the best rate tracked in Bangkok the same day, or 330 baht on a thousand dollars, and the Japanese yen best of 0.2079, against 0.213 in the capital, tells the same story. This is what the site’s guides call the island rate penalty, and the practical answer is to arrive with baht already in hand. The guide to Samui, Phangan and Tao and a cash plan made on the mainland is written for exactly that, and the island rate penalty explains how large it is and how to avoid it.
