Why island rates are worse
An island booth has no competitor fifty metres away, has to move banknotes by ferry, and knows you cannot easily walk out. Expect to lose several percent against a city rate, on top of a wider spread on anything other than dollars and euros.
Change before you go
Everyone arrives by ferry, usually via Samui or Surat Thani, and the Full Moon crowds push demand for cash far past what the island booths hold. Change on the mainland and bring enough for the whole stay.
