Super Money Chiangmai is the northern chain. It has two shops in Chiang Mai, one by the Night Bazaar and one on the north side of the Old City moat, and three more in provincial towns that most visitors reach by bus: Chiang Rai, Lampang and Nong Khai. It publishes its rates on its own site, which is where this site reads them from every few minutes.

This guide covers the two Chiang Mai branches in detail, the three others briefly, and the question people actually have: is it worth walking to, or is the counter at the airport or the bank on the corner good enough? The figures are from 2026-09-24; the live board is on the brand page.

The Chiang Mai branches

Loi Kroh Road. 34/4 Loi Kroh Road, Chang Khlan. This is the Night Bazaar end of town, on the road that runs from the moat down to the river past the bars and massage shops. Open 08:30–17:30, seven days a week. If you are staying in the Night Bazaar or riverside hotels, this is your branch.

Ratchawithi, Sri Phum Road. 25/4 Sri Phum Road, in the Sri Phum quarter along the north moat of the Old City. Open 08:30–17:30, seven days a week. This is the branch for Old City guesthouses and for anyone walking the moat road.

The hours matter more than the addresses. Both branches close at 17:30, which is earlier than the malls and earlier than the tourist-street changers in Bangkok and Pattaya. In Chiang Mai the evening is when the walking streets and the Night Bazaar fill up, so change money in the afternoon, not on the way out to dinner.

The gap between buy and sell is the shop’s margin, and it is where the money goes.

The provincial branches

The Sunday closure is the trap. Someone doing the Chiang Rai white temple on a Sunday and hoping to change money in town first will find the shutters down. Change in Chiang Mai the day before.

What it buys

Fourteen currencies: US, Australian, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Canadian and New Zealand dollars, the pound, euro, Swiss franc, yen, ringgit, won and yuan. That covers almost every reader of this page. It does not cover the rupee, the Vietnamese dong, the Lao kip or the Gulf currencies, so if you are carrying those you will need one of the bigger Bangkok chains before you fly north.

Rates on 2026-09-24

The chain’s best branch rate for the main currencies that day, with the best rate anywhere in Bangkok and the mid-market rate for scale:

For a provincial chain this is close to the Bangkok top. On US dollars it was 0.04 baht behind the best shop in the capital and 0.2% under mid-market. On euros it was 0.05 behind; on pounds 0.05. Chiang Mai readers used to hearing that the north pays worse can see the gap is a few satang, not a few per cent.

Where it ranks in Chiang Mai. Our fact sheet carries ranks for the Chiang Rai branch only, where it was 1st of 2 tracked shops for euros and 2nd of 2 for the rest. It does not carry a Chiang Mai ranking, so we will not guess one; the Chiang Mai page shows the current order against every other shop the site tracks in the city.

The note tiers. Super Money pays by denomination on dollars: 33.30 for US$50 and 100 notes, 33.05 for US$10 and 20, and 32.70 for US$1 to 5. That last step is 1.8% below the hundreds. US readers should carry hundreds; the rest of the currencies were quoted at a single rate that day.

When the airport or a bank is the better option

The airport. The site tracks no exchange counter inside Chiang Mai airport, so we cannot compare a rate. What we can say is that Super Money’s counters are closed by the time most evening flights land. If you arrive after 17:30 with no baht, change a small amount at whatever is open in the terminal or take one ATM withdrawal at the flat 220-baht fee, and do the real exchange at Loi Kroh or Sri Phum the next afternoon. The route from the terminal is in Chiang Mai airport to the Old City.

A bank. Bank counters win in three situations: you are carrying one of the currencies Super Money does not list; you need a stamped receipt for changing baht back later; or you are in a provincial town on a Sunday when the Super Money branch is shut. A bank will normally pay less than a dedicated changer, so it is the fallback, not the first choice.

Neither. If you are spending mainly by card on hotels, cafés and pre-booked tours, the cash you need for songthaews, markets and temple donations is small. One good exchange on your first afternoon covers a week.

Who does not need to think about this

Each branch’s live board, hours and map are on the shop pages, starting with Loi Kroh Road and Sri Phum Road.
